Sparks Fly in Lok Sabha: Exam "Fraud" Claims and Tribunal Staffing Crises

The Lok Sabha erupted into a heated war of words as opposition leaders confronted union ministers over critical systemic failures in India’s education and legal administration.

The Exam System Under Fire

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi launched a direct attack on the Education Minister, claiming the minister "has blamed everybody except himself" and fails to understand the fundamentals of the crisis. Gandhi asserted that millions of anxious students are convinced the Indian examination system is a "fraud" that can easily be bought by the wealthy. On behalf of the opposition, he demanded to know exactly what is being done to resolve this issue at a systemic level.

"Laundry Lists" vs. Staffing Realities

The debate shifted focus when opposition MP Shashi Tharoor dismissed the government's ease-of-doing-business presentation as a mere "laundry list of initiatives". Tharoor flagged a severe bottleneck: 67% of pending insolvency litigation cases have exceeded their 270-day limit. He highlighted a staggering staffing crisis at the Chennai NCLAT bench, which serves five southern states and two Union Territories with just a single stenographer doubling as a personal assistant, while the registrar sits in Delhi.

The Government's Retort

The Minister strongly defended the reforms—such as transitioning to a rapid T+1 settlement timeline—urging Tharoor to differentiate between a simple list and actual reform. While acknowledging that filling vacancies at the NCLT and NCLAT is an ongoing challenge, she assured parliament that the ministry is conducting interviews and working with the Supreme Court to resolve the staffing shortage with a "greater sense of urgency".

In a lighter moment, when the Minister’s microphone unexpectedly cut off mid-speech, she quiped to the opposition, "It’s not only the opposition members or mics which are getting off, even mine is off, if that satisfies you".

The Silent Threat: What is SIM Swapping Fraud and How Do You Stop It?

SIM swapping fraud is a cybercrime where attackers trick your mobile carrier into transferring your phone number to a SIM card they control. This allows them to intercept all your calls, texts, and One-Time Passwords (OTPs), enabling them to access your accounts and steal your money or identity. To protect yourself, avoid SMS-based two-factor authentication, lock your carrier account with a PIN, and practice good data hygiene.
